An Open Email to the City of Miami ► Unpacking Coconut Grove ► Part 6.1

This is a copy of the email I sent to the City of Miami Office of Communications. It was addressed to an email address I was given over the phone by a recording when trying to reach that department. I have yet to receive a reply.
To: Press@Miamigov.com
Date:

Subject: Trying to obtain information

I appreciate any help you can give me. I am a semi-retired journalist (with limited funds) trying to get to the bottom of a mystery concerning Coconut Grove's historic E.W.F. Stirrup House at 3242 Charles Avenue.

Unpacking Coconut Grove ► Part Six ► Still Building With No Building Permit

The E.W.F. Stirrup House on Friday, August 24, 2012. Note
the used metal studs leaning against the building. Used
materials to build their chi chi Bed and Breakfast? How nice.
Another visit to Charles Avenue on Friday demonstrated beyond a doubt that (alleged) illegal work is still going on inside the E.W.F. Stirrup House. More troubling is the fact that there is still no Building Permit on display.

Earlier in the week I called the City of Miami to check up on my complaint about work proceeding without a Building Permit. I was told the file had been closed, but there was no other information available. When I expressed my concern, I was transferred to a Building Department supervisor. I left a detailed message requesting I be called back. I am still waiting for that return phone call.

Used metal studs.
I am also still waiting for a return call from Maurice Pons, identified as the Chief of Inspections (Field) for the City of Miami Building Department. I left a detailed message during the week, expressing my concern about the (alleged) illegal work proceeding inside the historic, 120-year old E.W.F. Stirrup House and practically begged that someone get in touch with me so that I could be assured that an (alleged) rapacious developer was not (allegedly) getting away with something (allegedly) illegal. Begging didn't help either.

The Fox "News" Spin Cycle ► Episode Seven

Bizarro is owned by DC Comics.
The Fox "News" Spin Cycle continues to WHITEwash for Mendacious Mitt and Lyin' Ryan. It really is a trip into Bizarro World where up is down, in is out, and War is Peace. We have always been at war with Oceana. Today's episode of the Fox "News" Spin Cycleis full of lies, deflections, and just straight-out hilarity. Let's get right to it before the jokes go stale.

My Evening With First Lady Michelle Obama

My ticket.
It was a thrill to get my ticket to see The First Lady Michelle Obama. One thing that was less than thrilling: To get the ticket I had to fill out a form on which I left my phone number blank. Before they'd give mer the ticket they insisted I give them my phone number, so I reluctantly did. The night before the First Lady arrived I received 3 calls reminding me the First Lady was coming. The the exact reason I didn't want to give my phone number: I didn't want to be bothered by a number of electioneering calls. Three calls for the same thing, within an hour of each other, borders on harassment.

The Fox "News" Spin Cycle ► Episode Six

Bizarro is owned
by DC comics
It's getting harder and harder to keep up with the Fox "News" Spin Cycle. As the GOP flounders with trying to define legitimate vs illegitimate rape; trying to pretend there's a difference between what Todd Akin said and what the Romney-Ryan team believe; and covering for all of Mendacious Mitt's lies and Etch-A-Sketch moments, Fox "News" is forced to spin faster and wilder than ever. Mendacious Mitt and Paul "Ayn" Ryan need Fox "News" to WHITEwash their words and record because the truth would force people to go running to the Democratic Party.

So join me as I unpack the latest episode of the Fox "News" Spin Cycle.

A Charles Avenue Love Story ► Unpacking Coconut Grove ► Part Five

The Charlotte Jane Memorial Park Cemetery

On the corner of Charles Avenue and South Douglas Rd., on the opposite end of the street from the E.W.F. Stirrup House, is the Charlotte Jane Memorial Park Cemetery. It dates back to the early 1900s and at one time -- and for a long time -- was the only place in Coconut Grove where Black folk could consecrate and bury their dead.

The Fox "News" Spin Cycle ► Episode Five

Bizarro is owned by DC Comics
It was a busy day for the The Fox "News" Spin Cycle because it was the day AFTER Todd Akins (Republican Idiot) said that women who have been "legitimately raped" won't get pregnant because they have internal lasers that shoot down the offending sperm, or something like that.

I didn't quite understand it all, but he was quoting learned doctors, not to mention the fact that Akin's on the House of Representatives Science Committee, so he must know what he's talking about. Consequently, Fox "News" was spinning FURIOUSLY in order to get their brain dead viewers not to think about lady parts and internal lasers. It was just another adventure in Bizarro World, so let's take a look, shall we?

Unpacking Coconut Grove ► Part 4.1 ► A Photo Essay

The room on the second floor in
which the (alleged) illegal
demolition was taking place.
Another angle, showing the 2nd
floor front room and the former
upper porch, now an interior room.
A quick visit to Charles Avenue confirmed the (allegedly) illegal demolition inside the historic, 120-year old E.W.F. Stirrup House has stopped. Whether that was due to my reporting them to the City of Miami Building Department, because of my weekend blog post called Open Houses and Broken Laws, or whether they just ran out of work to do, is something I don't know.

However, I have a small clue that my post has been read by the alleged rapacious developer. There is now a lock and chain through the double-doors in the wall that separates the E.W.F. Stirrup property from the Grove Gardens Residences Condominiums mentioned in my previous post. I have never seen a chain and lock on that door before. Maybe they think that's how I get onto the property when I visit and thought this would block my way.

My First First Lady

My coveted ticket
I managed to score a ticket to see First Lady Michelle Obama on Wednesday. I am on her mailing list and she wrote to me personally, along with thousands and thousands of others, that she was coming to town and would just love to see me.

She gave three locations where her minions, aka the President Obama Re-election Campaign workers, would be giving out FREE tickets to see her on a First Come, First Served, one ticket per person basis.

Since there were a finite amount of tickets and, I presumed, an infinite number of people who would want them, I decided I would get there early. So for the 1:00 PM call I was shooting to arrive at high noon and, thinking there was a possibility I would be standing in the 95 degree heat for a while, 3 frozen bottles of water, only one of which would fit in my pocket.

The Fox "News" Spin Cycle ► Episode Four

Bizarro is owned by DC Comics
Having been incredibly busy the last few days, I've not been able to monitor the Fox "News" SPIN Cycle as much as I would have liked. However, that doesn't mean the Fox "News" SPIN has been any less furious and, even though I have only been half-paying attention, I still have a fuller plate of Fox "News" nonsense than I did in Episode One, or Episode Two, or Episode Three of this ongoing series.

It falls down into several categories: It's either designed to denigrate this administration; WHITEwash the Romney-Ryan distortion, lies, or flubs; promote the Romney-Ryan ticket as the best thing since McCain-Palin; denigrate people not like them; or just distract from the problems of the day.

So, let's dip our toe back into Bizarro World and see where that takes us.
